CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA -- In the first-ever meeting between the schools in volleyball, George Washington easily defeated North Florida, 3-0, Friday afternoon in the third match of the 20th annual Holiday Inn Jefferson Cup at the University of Virginia's Memorial Gymnasium. The Colonials won by the scores, 25-8, 25-21, 25-17 as all 15 Colonials appeared in the match.
The two-day, four-team tournament includes Liberty, North Florida and the host Cavaliers of Virginia.
The Colonials dominated the Ospreys in the first and third sets holding UNF to negative team hitting percentages. GW's 25-8 victory in the first set was it's most lopsided since a 25-7 decision in the third set against Fordham on Nov. 21, 2008. The Colonials strung together a 13-0 run in the middle of the first set behind the serving of Candace Silva-Martin and three kills by freshman Rachael Goss. Goss finished with her career-high nine kills for 10 points while Katie Zulandt hit .556 on six kills in nine attempts. Silva-Martin served a career-high four aces and added a match-high 24 digs as the Colonials totalled 52 digs compared to 37 for the Ospreys. GW's Lauren Whyte led all players with 12 kills to go with 12 digs for her fourth double-double in five matches this season. Freshman setter Hayley Woodford appeared in two sets at setter and tallied nine assists to spell starter Katie Crosby.
GW had to overcome a 10-6 deficit to begin the second set before taking a 15-14 lead on a kill by MacKenzie Knox and held on for the 25-21 triumph. The Colonials never trailed in the third set en route to the 25-17 victory.
North Florida (0-5) was led by Jessica Catelano's six kills and Nicole Baran's 13 digs. The Colonials out-hit UNF, .247 to -.020 for the match and totaled 48 points to just 25 for the Ospreys.
GW (3-2) next plays Saturday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. against Virginia (4-0). The Colonials lead Virginia, 9-5, in the all-time series which dates back to 1981. The Cavaliers defeated UNF, 3-0, earlier Friday and face Liberty later Friday evening.
