WASHINGTON, DC -- The George Washington volleyball team made themselves at home with a 3-0 triumph over visiting Loyola (MD) Wednesday night in the home opener at the newly renovated Charles E. Smith Center. The Colonials won by the scores, 25-16, 25-17, 25-20 in 80 minutes. GW lit up the new Daktronics video scoreboard with 54 kills compare to Loyola's 27 kills.
The Colonials combined to hit .234 for the match while holding Loyola to a .092 attack percentage. GW sophomore Lauren Whyte, the A-10 Offensive Player of the Week, led all players with 17 kills while hitting .310. Teammate Katie Zulandt added eight kills while Candace Silva -Martin recorded a team-high 15 digs.
The Colonials never trailed in the first set and led by as much as 11 (23-12) beforecoasting to the 25-16 victory. The second set was the most competitive of the evening with three lead changes and five ties, the last coming at 8-8 before the Colonials put together a 13-3 run for a 21-11 advantage en route to the 25-17 triumph.
GW raced out to a 7-2 lead in set three before the Greyhounds rallied to within two at 12-10 on a GW attack error. The Colonials then scored six ofthe next seven points to open an 18-11 bulge before eventually prevailing, 25-20.
Loyola (5-7) was led by Nina Camaioni's nine kills for 10.5 points and Brittany Born's match-high 22 digs.
GW (8-3) next plays Friday night at No. 2-ranked Penn State (7-1) in the Rockvale Outlets Classic. St. John's and Princeton make up the remainder of the tournament field. The Colonials face the Nittany Lions at 7 p.m. Friday with two matches Saturday at PSU's Rec Hall in University Park, PA. Penn State is coming off its first loss in three years (109 matches) after dropping a 3-0 decision to top-ranked Stanford last Saturday in Gainesville, FL.
