Volleyball Falls to Cleveland State, 3-0, in CSU Invitational

CLEVELAND, OH -- George Washington fell to Cleveland State, 3-0, Friday night in the CSU Invitational. The loss snapped a three-match winning streak for GW (5-3) while the Vikings improved to 7-0 equalling its best start in CSU history. CSU won by the scores, 25-21, 25-18, 25-23, in and hour and 21 minutes.
Kent State and Morgan State are also in the CSU Invitational field. KSU swept MSU earlier Friday at CSU's Woodling Gym.
Playing before family and friends from nearby Olmsted Falls, OH, Lauren Whyte led all players with 14 kills and added seven digs for 15.5 points. It was also a homecoming of sorts for GW senior co-captain Katie Zulandt who hails from nearby Chardon, OH. Zulandt contributed six kills and a block assist for 6.5 points.
The Colonials took an 8-4 lead to begin the match and held the advantage until CSU tied the set at 16-16 on a kill by Amy Benz. A Rachael Goss kill put the Colonials up, 17-16, before a GW attack error tied the score at 17-17. The Vikings outscored GW, 8-4, the rest of the way to earn the 25-21 triumph.
CSU led throughout the second set and coasted to the 25-18 victory. Set three featured six ties, the last coming at 23-23 before a kill by CSU's Jackie Dabbelt. A GW attack error followed and ended the match at 25-23.
Colonials' junior MacKenzie Knox hit an efficient .417 on six kills in 12 swings with five blocks for nine points. Katie Crosby assisted on 31 of GW's 39 kills at the Colonials combined to hit just .185 for the match compared to .298 for the Vikings. GW libero Candace Silva-Martin added a team-high 14 digs.
Cleveland State was led by Koch's 18 kills and Amy Grabiec's 16 digs. Benz hit .467 with eight kills for CSU.
The loss was GW's first to Cleveland State in four meetings. The teams first met in 1985.
GW (5-3) next plays Saturday against Kent State (5-4) at 10:30 a.m. followed by a match with Morgan State (1-7) at 4:30 p.m. It marks the first meeting between GW and Kent State and the Colonials lead, 6-0, in the all-time series with Morgan State.
