WASHINGTON, DC - George Washington women's softball head coach Kim Staehle and assistant coaches Andrea Moss and Megan Cusick have announced the addition of four newcomers to the 2011 season roster.
Joining the 15 returning players are infielders Lacey Cook (Dade City, FL/Zephyrhills) and Chelsea Curcio (South River, NJ/Bishop George Ahr High), pitcher Courtney Martin (Tempe, AZ/Xavier College Prep) and outfielder Chelsea Lenhart (Phoenix, AZ/Sandra Day O'Connor High).
Cook helped her Zephyrhills High School team to two district titles and finished second in the state of Florida her freshman prep season. Cook was also a two-time First Team All-Sunshine Conference selection as a junior and senior infielder. She also played most recently with traveling softball team, the Clearwater Bullets.
"We are thrilled to work with Lacy," said Staehle. "We have been tracking her since her freshman prep season and can't wait to see her impact to our infield. She is strong and athletic and should perform well at this level."
Curcio split time between playing third base and catching for the Bishop George Ahr High Trojans. She helped the Trojans win four division championships, as well as Greater Middlesex Conference and NJSIAA Non-Public South A Sectional titles. Curcio played traveling softball with the Jersey Intensity for the past four seasons.
"Chelsea is a very versatile player that brings depth not only at second base but also behind the dish," said Cusick, who works with the catchers. "We expect her to earn a place in the starting line-up and are excited to see her progress."
A right-handed pitcher, Martin posted a 1.91 earned run average in her senior season with the Xavier College Prep Gators.
"Courtney shows the signs of a true pitcher," said Moss, who works with the Colonials pitching staff. "She has the finesse and work ethic to make an immediate impact on our program. I am excited to watch her develop into a starting pitcher for our program."
Lenhart helped the O'Connor Eagles to three region championships, three state final four appearances as well as collecting all-state honorable mentions, first team all-region and all-region scholar athlete accolades.
"Chelsea will make an immediate impact to our lineup," said Staehle. "She is explosive and has great speed. We anticipate Chelsea should push for the starting nod in center field."
