OLEAN, NY - Following an unexpected week-long layoff, the George Washington women's basketball team returns to action Sunday at St. Bonaventure at 1:00 pm. Due to the record snowfall in the Washington Metro area over the past week, the Colonials have been able to fully practice only twice this week and had their mid-week game against Richmond postponed to a later date yet to be determined.
Sophomore Kay-Kay Allums is expected to play after missing two games due to suspension for violation of team rules.
GW (5-17, 2-7 A-10) traveled on foot to the Palumbo Center to play Duquesne last Saturday and nearly walked away with a victory, but Vanessa Abel's two free throws with 27 seconds left lifted the second-place Dukes over the Colonials, 66-64, in a game that aired on CBS College Sports. GW's adventurous afternoon began with a three-block trek after the team bus got stuck en route to the arena due to the near 20 inches of snow in the Pittsburgh area. After besting the snow, the Colonials managed to erase an eight-point deficit with less than four minutes to play to knot it at 64-64 with 49 seconds left. However, after Abel's foul shots with 27 seconds, rookie Megan Nipe and sophomore Tiana Myers missed shots to tie and win as time expired as GW dropped its third straight game.
GW defeated St. Bonaventure, 66-60, at Smith Center last February to avenge a 63-60 upset loss at the Reilly Center the previous season. That loss by the then No. 14/13-ranked Colonials snapped a 27-game winning streak over the Bonnies dating back to the 1989-90 season.
St. Bonaventure (17-8, 5-5 A-10) has lost two straight games and split its last 10 following a 64-58 loss at Charlotte Wednesday night. The Bonnies scored a season-low 15 first-half points and trailed by 14 with less than five minutes to play before closing within single-digits late. Jessica Jenkins led SBU with 18 points against the 49ers, followed by 13 from Megan Van Tatenhove and 10 from Andrea Doneth. Dana Mitchell, the A-10's second-leading scorer at 15.8 points per game, managed just two points on 1-of-11 shooting in the loss.
The Bonnies are coming off their most successful Division I season in school history after posting a 23-11 record and advancing to the quarterfinal round of the Postseason WNIT in 2008-09. The Bonnies also won a record nine A-10 games last season to tie for fourth in the final league standings.
St. Bonaventure's stingy defense leads the A-10 at just 53.4 points allowed per game, as well as rebounding defense (29.8) and free throw percentage (80.3%). The Bonnies are also near the top of the league in scoring offense (4th, 64.1 ppg), field goal percentage (2nd, 45.2%) and three-point field goal percentage (2nd, 38.3%).
