TERRE HAUTE, IND - George Washington senior Megan Hogan concluded her incredible 2010 season with an eighth-place finish at the NCAA Cross Country Championships in Terre Haute, IN on Monday afternoon. Hogan becomes a two-time All-American following her 27th-place finish in 2009.
"She ran fantastic" said head coach Brian Beil. "Just being in the conversation for a potential national championship is a huge honor. She was being talked about as having a chance to win. Now she is a two-time All-American and it is amazing. I'm so excited for her because this is such a tough thing to do in this sport. Its something we may never have again."
On an overcast and blustery day in "Cross Country Town USA", Hogan completed the 6K Laver Gibson Championship Course in 20:19.6, which was 15 seconds faster then her time at last years championship. Hogan was consistently in the top-15 at the front of the 253 runner-wide field. At the 3,000 meter mark Hogan was in sole possession of third place, trailing the eventual winner, Villanova's Sheila Reid and Texas-El Paso's Risper Kimaiyo.
"I am very happy with my eighth-place finish", said Hogan. "The course was great, the terrain was perfect. The wind though, was insane. I have never had a race where the wind was that strong. So it kept me in check, I ended up avoiding the wind for the most part until the end."
"It was really windy, and in this sport you are not trying to take a lead in the wind" said Beil. "She started slow so she tucked into the pack and waited. Someone made a break and she did the best she could to close. Given the circumstances, she did great and ran fantastic. I'm very happy for her."
Down the final stretch, Hogan was in sixth-place as a flurry of late movement began to take shape. She was in a three wide race for sixth when she was caught from behind by the Van Dalen sisters of Stony Brook.
"The race went out pretty slow and then around 4K the pace really kicked in and the pack started to separate. I just held my ground" said Hogan.
2010 has been a year of repeats for Hogan. On October 30th she repeated as the Atlantic 10 individual champion with a record setting performance, followed by becoming a repeat recipient of the A-10 women's cross country Performer of the Year award. On November 9th, Hogan won her second consecutive Atlantic 10 Student-Athlete of the Year Award, followed by qualifying for her third straight NCAA Championship. Today, she becomes a two-time All-American.
"Being a two-time All-American means a lot to me, it is such an honor", said Hogan. "It hasn't really hit me yet but I can tell you it feels great. Not many people get the chance to say that `I am an All-American', but now I can say that I am a two-time All-American and it is amazing."
