NEWPORT NEWS, VA -- George Washington senior Katie Zulandt has been named the Atlantic 10 Conference Defensive Player of the Week, and freshman Rachael Goss was named the A-10 co-Rookie of the Week, for volleyball the league office announced Tuesday. It marks the first A-10 weekly honors for both players.
The Colonials' co-captain, Zulandt earned the honor after she scored a total of 47.5 points while hitting a combined .443 with 15 total blocks in GW's three matches last week. Zulandt's play helped lead GW to a 2-1 record (8-5 sets record) last week in home victories over VCU Sept. 28 and Saint Louis on Oct. 3, sandwiched around a narrow five-set loss to Duquesne Oct. 1. Zulandt slammed her career-high 13 kills and hit .458 against Saint Louis in GW's first victory over the Billikens in 18 years. Zulandt has started 74 of GW's 75 sets in 20 matches this season and ranks ninth in the A-10 in points with 3.36 per set.
Zulandt's stats for the week: three matches, 13 sets, 35 kills in 61 attempts with eight errors for a .443 attack percentage, 12 digs, three service aces and 15 total blocks (four solo, 11 assisted) for 47.5 total points.
In the Colonials' 3-1 victory over VCU Sept. 28, Goss pounded her career-high 16 kills and in GW's 3-2 loss to Duquesne Friday, Goss had 14 kills to go with her career-high 15 digs for her first collegiate double-double. What made the Duquesne match unique, however, was that Goss's older sister, Katie, plays for the Dukes. Goss has played in 64 of GW's 74 sets this season and her 125 points ranks fourth on the team.
Goss's stats for the week: three matches, 13 sets, 39 kills in 130 attempts with 15 errors for a .185 attack percentage, 36 digs (2.77 digs per set), two service aces and three block assists for 42.5 total points.
Zulandt, Goss and the rest of the Colonials (13-7, 2-1 A-10) next play Rhode Island (11-5, 2-2 A-10) Friday at Kingston, RI, beginning at 7 p.m.
