Colonials Drop First Home Match of Season to Bonnies

WASHINGTON, DC - GW women's soccer dropped their first home game of the season to St. Bonaventure, 2-0, on Friday at Mount Vernon Field. The Colonials were previously unbeaten at The Vern this season at 6-0.
"It's definitely a disappointing result," said head coach Tanya Vogel. "I think our focus going forward, on Sunday we are going to have to attack. We have to shoot the ball, if we are going to score."
Four minutes into the first half, the Bonnies (11-7-0, 5-3-0 A-10) worked an inbounds play on the far side of the field that junior Janine Rotsides was able to break up. But the Colonials were unable to clear the ball when Courtney Bosse was able to recover and toe a pass to teammate Tori Burchett for a low corner goal.
GW (9-8-0, 3-5-0) fought to take four shots in the first half. Adriana Moya took one of her three shots in the 14th minute but St. Bonaventure goalkeeper Nicole Markert was able to wrap it up.
Junior Sierra Smidinger pushed a header just wide of the goal in the 43rd minute as the Colonials tried to capitalize on the Bonnies being whistled for a foul.
The Colonials came out in the second half more physical, earning two of three corners in the first three minutes of the half. GW was unable to connect on either of Molly Bruh's feeds from the corner.
SBU went up by two scores in the 67th minute, when Courtney Hoenicke pushed the ball up the field to Burchett for the goal.
"The other thing about Sunday is that it's going to be these freshmen, sophomores and juniors opportunity to pay tribute to their seniors," said Vogel. "We will give everything we've got to finish with 10 wins and see how the Conference plays out."
The Colonials will honor 10 teammates in Senior Day festivities on Sunday, when they take on Duquesne at 1:00 p.m. at Mount Vernon Field. GW defeated the Dukes in 2009 at home, 1-0, when Smidinger fed Britney Eger, on her Senior Day, for the goal.
