WASHINGTON, DC - In a match that pitted sisters' teams against one another, it was Katie Goss's Duquesne Dukes outlasting Rachael Goss's George Washington squad, 3-2, Friday night in an Atlantic 10 Conference match at at Charles E. Smith Center. The Dukes overcame a two-set deficit to win by the scores, 23-25, 23-25, 25-16, 25-22, 15-11 in just over two hours. The Goss sisters are Manassas, VA, natives.
Playing just seven players, Duquesne combined to hit .205 on 71 kills in 200 attempts with 30 errors while GW managed to hit just .159 (61-29-201). GW outblocked the Dukes, 13-9, but Duquesne out-pointed GW, 83-77.
Four Colonials recorded double-figure kills led by Lauren Whyte's 16 kills and matched her career high with 19 digs for 21 points. Rachael Goss added 14.5 points on 14 kills and her career-high 15 digs. MacKenzie Knox and Katie Zulandt were the other Colonials in double-figure kills with 11 each. Candace Silva-Martin led all players with 24 digs.
Playing its third straight match without the services of senior co-captain Leah Hill who is sidelined with an injury, the Colonials squeaked out a pair of two-point victories in the first two sets before Duquesne turned the tables in the third set.
The Dukes owned the third set building a 10-3 lead and coasting to the 25-16 win. Set four was the closest of the match with two lead changes and five ties, the last coming at 7-7 before a pair of GW attack errors gave Duquesne a lead it would not relinquish en route to a 25-22 triumph.
The fifth set started out well for GW after the Colonials raced out to a 6-2 lead on an ace from Whyte and a Duke attack error. GW unraveled, however, and Duquesne rallied to take an 11-7 lead after six GW errors and a kill by Ashley Buse. Duquesne put the match away on a kill by Allison Foschia to win the set, 15-11.
Duquesne (12-6, 1-2) was led by Liz Homan's 18 kills and five blocks for 20.5 points and Sara Scheirman's 19.5 points on 17 kills, 16 digs and three blocks. Foschia led the Dukes with 21 digs.
