GW Swimming Falls to Rival George Mason

WASHINGTON -- The George Washington swim team finished the regular season at George Mason on Sunday at the Jim McKay Natatorium, with both teams falling to the Patriots. The men's squad fell 109-87, while the women fell 113-73.
The Colonials women's 200-yard medley relay team took first place with a time of 1:51.18 in the meet's opening event. Junior Paola Leor posted an individual time of 23.93 in her anchor leg of the race.
The men's squad followed with an exciting 400-yard medley relay race, beating Mason's A relay team by .64 hundredths of a second for the win. The relay team was made of freshmen Zach Peart, Paolo De Luca, Alex Etz and sophomore Marshall Seedorff.
Freshman Niklas Glenesk took the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:44.44, almost two full seconds ahead of the second-place finisher from George Mason. Fellow GW freshmen Luke Quimby finished third (1:48.16), Jim Coleman finished fourth (1:50.58) and De Luca finished sixth (1:54.95).
Leor took second in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 58.09, which is 1.70 seconds off her second-best time (54.39) in the same event in GW women's swimming program history.
In the men's' 200-yard backstroke, Etz finished with a time of 1:58.60 for first place. De Luca and junior Andrew Maguire finished one-two in the 200-yard breaststroke for the Colonials, with times of 2:11.96 and 2:14.02 respectively.
The all-freshman 400-yard freestyle relay team of Glenesk, Coleman, Quimby and Etz, closed the meet in dramatic fashion, finishing just .01 hundredth of a second behind Mason, with a time of 3:14.05.
The Colonials will next compete at the 2010 Atlantic 10 Swimming and Diving Championships on Feb. 17-20, in Buffalo, NY, at the Burt Flickinger Center, hosted by St. Bonaventure University.
