GW Coach Karl Hobbs
Is the team's post play on offense still coming together?
"I thought [our post players] played a very good game, but that doesn't necessarily mean they're going to score a lot of points. It's them playing their role in terms of the help defense, rebounding, and those sorts of things."
Was Richmond more physical, or did the refs call it tighter?
"I really don't want to comment on the officials. We lost to a good basketball team. We made too many errors and most of them were unforced. That's something we just have to get better at."
What led to Richmond's improved 3-point scoring in the 2nd half?
"They spread us out and a couple of 3s were tough, and the last one was off penetration when we had to help and the guy made an open shot. They're a very good 3-point shooting team; that's a major part of their offense."
You've lost 4 straight in the A-10. What happens next?
"We just have to get better. Once again we played another very good basketball team. We're 1-4, but there are a lot of basketball games left."
Why wasn't Damian Hollis in the starting lineup?
"He had an injury. We weren't sure if he was even going to play today. He hasn't practiced in 2 days, he's got a sore rib cage. He was really questionable before the game...but overall, I thought his effort was fantastic."
How did you like the pace of today's game?
"I liked the pace, I thought it was great. We made them play our style of game. But again, it came down to too many unforced errors for us--bad passes, questionable decisions, an offensive foul against [David] Pellom down in the post. You just can't do that against good teams."
Richmond Coach Chris Mooney
Were there more fouls than normal today?
"I thought there were a lot of fouls. The game was extremely competitive, it was hard-fought, and there were a lot of fouls. Personally, think that's the best way to deal with a game like that--blow the whistle and make sure the guys to stop fouling...It turned out to be even. We need to defend without fouling, but for us to get to the foul line a lot is a positive."
How did the last 3-point shot by Ryan Butler come about?
"We called timeout to set up a play for Kevin [Anderson], but we couldn't get him the ball, so Dave [Gonzalvez] ran the play and made a very good move along the baseline. When Ryan's man helped on him, he threw the ball out to Ryan who banged the big shot. That's a 5th-year senior in a big situation on the road, and it worked out."
How did you improve the 3-point shooting in the 2nd half?
"As hard-fought as the game was, I thought we passed up a few shots in the first half. Their defense was very aggressive. There was a lot of pressure on our perimeter players. There's an adjustment period to that kind of pressure, and we didn't adjust quickly enough...We did better in the 2nd half because we adjusted to the pressure more quickly."
Did you deliberately slow things down to neutralize GW's offense?
"On defense, we wanted to make sure we didn't give up too many transition baskets. They did get some of those, but we've been very good at that all season. We wanted to make sure they played half-court offense. How quickly we shot wasn't necessarily a concern of ours, but we wanted to make sure they didn't get any easy fastbreak baskets."
