DAYTON, OH -- In a matchup of experience vs. youth, Dayton's veterans easily prevailed, 66-51, in an Atlantic 10 tilt with visiting George Washington Wednesday before a crowd of 12,630 at University of Dayton Arena. The 51 points was GW's lowest scoring output of the season.
Freshman Lasan Kromah led the Colonials with a game-high 14 points, on 6-of-12 shooting. Tony Taylor added seven points and five assists with no turnovers for GW.
Dayton (14-4, 3-1) was led by Chris Wright`s 14 points and 12 rebounds to pace the Flyers who improved to 10-0 at home this season and extended its school-record home winning streak to 30 games. Marcus Johnson (13 points), Mickey Perry (11) and Chis Johnson (10 points) were the other Flyers in double figures.
Dayton controlled the boards with a 43-30 advantage over GW including a 15-8 edge in offensive rebounds.
GW (11-6, 1-3) shot 37.5 percent (9-24) in a first half including just 2-9 from long range and 6-for-12 from the free throw line. The teams combined for 14 turnovers and a missed dunk by GW in the opening period.
After Dayton built a 38-26 lead by halftime, the Flyers opened the second half with a 14-4 run to take a commanding 54-30 lead and was never threatened after that. For much of the game, the Colonials had three or four freshmen on the court at the same time. They were faced with the unenviable task of guarding Dayton's senior-heavy lineup. GW senior Damian Hollis was held to a season-low five points in just 12 minutes of playing time.
In an unfortunate case of deja vu for the Colonials, GW was hit with an administrative technical foul for having six players on the court coming out of a 30-second timeout at the 8:49 mark of the first half, the same violation that cost GW a chance at defeating the Flyers in last year's game at Smith Center.
GW next hosts Richmond (14-5, 3-1) on Saturday, Jan. 23. The game is scheduled to tip off at 2 p.m. and will be broadcast live on 1500 AM and 820 AM as well as online at www.FederalNewsRadio.com.
