Volleyball Benefits From Loyola Miscues to Win 3-0

BALTIMORE, MD -- After breezing through the first set, the GW Volleyball team had to hang on to edge Loyola (MD) in a pair of tight sets to win the match, 3-0, Wednesday night in Baltimore. GW won by the scores, 25-15, 27-25, 26-24, at Loyola's Reitz Arena. The victory was GW's fifth in its last six outings.
GW was led by junior Leah Hill's 15 points on a match-high 15 kills while teammate Katie Butz hit .370 with 14 kills in 27 attempts. Candace Silva-Martin added a team-best 17 digs and Lauren Whyte had 15 digs and seven kills.
Loyola (8-11) was led by Nina Camaioni's team-high 14 kills and 13 digs while Brittany Born led the Greyhounds with 17 digs but untimely attack errors cost Loyola set points in both the second and third sets.
GW took control in set one and forged an insurmountable 19-9 lead en route to the 25-15 win. Sophomore MacKenzie Knox ended the set with her second kill of the night. The second set featured a pair of lead changes and 13 ties, the last coming at 25-25 after a Loyola attack error. GW's Hill smashed a kill to put the Colonials up by one for set point and then won it on another Greyhound miscue by Taylor Koncelik.
The third set also was very close with four lead changes and 11 ties. With the set knotted at 24-24 on a kill by LU's Kathyrn Dircks, the Greyhounds gave away the set and match on a pair of attack errors.
As a team, the Colonials' offense combined to hit .265, and held the Greyhounds to just a .136 hitting percentage.
GW (10-5, 1-1 A-10) finally plays its home opener Friday, Oct. 2 when it hosts Rhode Island (5-8, 0-2 A-10) in a 7 p.m. A-10 match. Friday's match, which takes place during alumni weekend, marks the first official athletic competition in the newly renovated Charles E. Smith Center.
