WASHINGTON, DC -- The George Washington University has announced its 2009-10 men's basketball schedule, which includes high-profile non-conference home games against Oregon State and Providence. The OSU game marks the first-ever visit to Charles E. Smith Center by an opponent from the Pacific-10 Conference and the first of nine games against opponents that qualified for the 2009 postseason. Details about televised games, which could affect the game times listed, will be announced at a later date.
"Rebuild The Excitement!" will be the Colonials' slogan in 2009-10 under ninth-year head coach Karl Hobbs. The home of Colonials Basketball, Charles E. Smith Center, has completed the first two phases of a three-phase multi-million dollar renovation. In addition, Hobbs welcomes six newcomers and new assistant coach Brian Ellerbe to his program.
GW will open the season Nov. 15 at UNC Wilmington and face Boston University two days later in Boston. The GW-UNC Wilmington game is a rematch of the thrilling 2006 NCAA Tournament first-round game won by GW in overtime at Greensboro, NC. The home opener is set for Nov. 21 against UMBC followed by Princeton (Nov. 24), Oregon State (Nov. 28) and George Mason (Dec. 2). Both the Beavers (CBI) and the Patriots (NIT) qualified for postseason play last year.
On Dec. 6 the Colonials take on local rival Navy at the Verizon Center as part of a doubleheader with Maryland going against Villanova in the 15th Annual BB&T Classic to benefit the Childrens' Charities Foundation of Washington, DC. The Colonials return to Smith Center to host Providence (NIT) on Dec. 9, another 2009 postseason team. After a four-game road trip that will take the Colonials to Towson, East Carolina, Holy Cross and Harvard, GW will begin the 2010 calendar year by hosting Howard on Jan. 2.
In the Atlantic 10, GW will play three games against league opponents that qualified for the 2009 NCAA Tournament field when it faces Dayton, Temple and Xavier at home Jan. 10. Other postseason A-10 opponents include 2009 NIT participants Duquesne and Rhode Island as well as two games against College Basketball Invitational (CBI) semi-finalist Richmond.
The A-10 will play a 16-game Conference schedule in 2009-10, which allows teams to face each opponent once and three teams twice. GW will play a home-and-home series against Charlotte, La Salle and Richmond. The Colonials will face the other A-10 teams just once with home games against Duquesne, Massachusetts, Saint Louis and `Senior Night' against Saint Joseph's in addition to the home games with Charlotte, La Salle and Richmond. GW will travel to Dayton, Fordham, Rhode Island, St. Bonaventure and Temple in addition to Charlotte, La Salle and Richmond.
The top 12 teams in the standings at the conclusion of the regular season will advance to the 2010 Men's Basketball Championship. The first round games of the Championship will be hosted on the campuses of teams seeded #5, #6, #7, and #8 on Tuesday, Mar. 9, 2010. The top four seeded teams (#1-#4) will again receive a bye into the quarterfinal round, scheduled for Friday, Mar. 12 at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, NJ. Semifinal action will take place on Saturday, Mar. 13, with the Championship game held on Sunday, Mar. 14, and televised nationally at 1:00 p.m. on CBS Sports for the first time in A-10 history.
