Doug English Named as Assistant Coach for GW Volleyball

WASHINGTON, DC - Doug English has been named as an Assistant Coach for the George Washington University volleyball program, GW head coach Jojit Coronel has announced. English replaces former Associate Head Coach, Amy Bambenek, who resigned in March to accept the head coach position at UNC Wilmington.
English comes to GW after spending the last three years as an assistant coach for the Boise State University volleyball program. Prior to that, English was an assistant coach at Fordham and at Loyola Marymount University.
English also has coaching experience on the club level, serving as an assistant coach with the San Gabriel Volleyball Club from 2001-04. In 2003-04, the 18-1 squad finished 15th in the National Division in Houston, TX. In 2002-03, he served as the co-head coach of the 14 black team while in 2001-02, English was an assistant with the 16 black team. From 1999-02, English also served as the head junior varsity volleyball coach and assistant varsity coach at Crescenta Valley High School.
A 2004 graduate of Cal State Northridge with a bachelor's degree in mathematics, English was a four-year member of the Matadors men's volleyball team. He was named a 2003 AVCA First Team All-American as well as being a First Team All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) selection. He also was selected that year for the World University Games training team. In 2004, he wrapped up his collegiate career as the school's career leader in digs and was named the 2004 Cal State Northridge Male of the Year in 2004. Academically, he was named to the MPSF All-Academic Team all four years.
Coronel also announced the addition of Russ Friedland to the position of second assistant coach. Friedland comes to GW after spending the past year coaching the Metro American Volleyball Club team in Washington, DC. Friedland also served as head coach at Daniel Webster College in New Hampshire in 2007-08 and as a volunteer assistant coach at American University in 2008.
GW concluded the 2008 season with a 19-11 overall record, 9-4 in the Atlantic 10 Conference and qualified for the A-10 Championship tournament for the second straight year. The Colonials will open the 2009 season in the annual DC Challenge, August 28-29, against Georgetown in a match that will take place at George Mason University on Aug. 28. GW will then face American and George Mason on Aug. 29 at American University's Bender Arena in northwest Washington.
