HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, FL -- GW junior Cole Turner fired a three-round 229 (78-79-72) to tie for 19th place among 60 golfers at the 2009 Atlantic 10 Championship, Friday through Sunday, at the 6,887-yard, par-71 El Campeon course at the Mission Inn Resort near Orlando.
GW sophomore Brendan Barrack tied for 27th with a -over-par 234 (79-78-77), one sstroke ahead of teammate Lewis Sturdy's 235 (76-83-77) as the Colonials placed eighth in the 12-team field. The eighth-place finish was one spot higher than last year's showing at the A-10 Championship.
"I'm real proud of the way our guys battled back after a tough start," GW coach Terry Shaffer said. "There was a particular stretch of holes that gave most of our guys trouble, especially the par-3 eighth. It's surrounded by water on three sides and the wind was strong enough that you had to aim out over the water and let the wind bring it back to the green."
Charlotte claimed its fourth straight Atlantic 10 Men's Golf Championship finishing 11 strokes ahead of runner-up Xavier. Charlotte earns the A-10's automatic bid to the NCAA Golf championship and will be making its fifth-straight NCAA appearance. Charlotte junior Corey Nagy shot one-under over 54 holes to win the individual title. Charlotte interim head coach Adam Pry, who was tabbed the 2009 A-10 Coach of the Year.
For the second straight year, a GW golfer was disqualified for signing an incorrect scorecard. Freshman Brandon Rukin signed his incorrect card for Sunday's round which disqualified his third-round score. Conor McMahon made the same error following the second round at last year's A-10s.
