Women's Lacrosse Loses at Virginia Tech, 20-10

BLACKSBURG, VA - The George Washington women's lacrosse team reached double-digit goals for the second straight game, but allowed a season-high 20 goals in a 20-10 loss at Virginia Tech Sunday afternoon.
Led by sophomore Lauren Mobyed's hat trick, GW (0-6) netted its second-most goals of the season, but allowed 20-or-more goals for the first time in the program's eight-year history.
Junior Mia Breheny scored three points on two goals and an assist to bring her season totals to a team-leading 11 goals, four assists and 15 points, followed by a goal apiece from seniors Katherine Sampson and Katie Lilly, sophomores Audrey Joy and Kristin Mobyed and freshman Megan Seidman.
Lilly added a team-high five ground balls and, along with Breheny, had three draw controls. Kristin Mobyed led the Colonials with four draws.
Virginia Tech (2-4) scored the first four goals of the game and used several runs of three-or-more goals to keep GW at bay. The Colonials got within 5-3 on goals from Lilly and Breheny midway through the first half, but the Hokies used three straight goals to lead by five, 8-3, with 13:12 left in the period.
Lauren Mobyed and Breheny again netted back-to-back goals and Seidman added a goal with 2:14 to play in the half to trail 10-6 at the break.
Virginia Tech opened the second half with four unaswered goals to grab its largest lead, 18-6, and GW would get no closer than seven the rest of the way.
Rachel Culp tallied six goals and Allie Emala netted five to pace the Hokies' attack.
Sophomore Christine Lovett made six saves on 33 shots faced and 41 minutes of action in her first career start. Classmate Liz Hoffman made one save over the final 19 minutes in goal.
GW will look for its first victory of the season Wednesday at Mount St. Mary's, a team it is 5-2 against all-time. Opening draw is at 3:00 pm.
