Volleyball's Whyte Named A-10 Rookie of the Week

NEWPORT NEWS, VA -- George Washington freshman Lauren Whyte (Olmsted Falls, OH/Olmsted Falls) has been named the Atlantic 10 Conference Rookie of the Week, the league office announced Monday. It marks her second A-10 weekly honor. She also was named the Rookie of the Week on Oct. 5.
The Colonials' outside hitter earned the honor after she scored a total of 29.5 points in GW's two A-10 victories last week. Whyte's play helped lead GW to a perfect 2-0 record (6-1 sets record) last week in home victories over Duquesne Nov. 6 and over Charlotte on Sunday.
In the Colonials' 3-1 triumph over Duquesne Friday, Whyte hit .263 with 16 kills in 38 swings with 11 digs and a block solo. Sunday against Charlotte, Whyte recorded 10 kills with 16 digs for her sixth double-double of the season. Whyte has started 106 of 107 sets in GW's 30 matches and is third on the team in kills with 286 and points with 312.0.
Whyte's stats for the week: two matches, seven sets, 26 kills in 68 attempts with 13 errors for a .191 hitting percentage, 27 digs (3.86 digs per set), two service aces, one assist and two blocks for 29.5 points.
GW (21-9, 8-5 A-10) goes on the road for the final two matches of the regular season beginning Friday at Xavier in a 1:00 p.m. match followed by a Saturday match at Dayton beginning at 7:00 p.m. The Colonials have qualified for one of the six seeds in the 2009 A-10 Championship Tournament, Nov. 20-22, hosted by Dayton.
