WASHINGTON, DC -- GW freshman Bryan Bynes nailed four three-pointers, including a pair in the final three minutes, to help lead George Washington to its fourth victory, 65-50, over visiting Princeton Tuesday at Charles E. Smith Center.
After grinding out a 28-21 lead at halftime, the Colonials pushed their lead to 10 at 36-26 on a pair of emphatic dunks by freshman forward David Pellom over a 30-second span. GW led by 11 (45-34) at the 10:43 mark of the second half before the Tigers slowly cut into the lead. Behind a pair of jumpers from Patrick Saunders and a layup from Will Barrett, Princeton got to within five at 45-50 with 9:17 left. After the teams traded baskets, GW put together a 5-0 run on a jumper by Tony Taylor and a three-pointer from Damian Hollis to push the Colonials lead back to 10 at 56-45 with 3:50 left. The Colonials' lead ballooned to 19 (65-46) on a pair of three-pointers and a free throw from Bynes at the 1:32 mark and GW coasted to the 15-point triumph.
Saunders led the Tigers with a team-high 12 points of 5-7 field goals . Princeton shot just 34.6 (18-52) from the field but forced 20 GW turnovers. The Colonials shot 41.7 percent (20-48) from the field including 56.3 percent (9-16) from three-point range and 94 percent (16-17) from the line.
""I thought we looked young today," GW coach Karl Hobbs said after the game. "We had moments where we looked confused or unsure, or we were just trying to play a little too fast. We didn't want to be in a hurry, but we wanted to be quick, and sometimes, we were too much in a hurry."
The teams observed a moment of silence prior to the game for the passing of trustee emeritus and GW alumnus Abe Pollin (`45). Pollin was a member of the Board of Trustees from 1974-1999 and was inducted into the School of Business Sports Executive Hall of Fame in March, 2009.
GW next hosts Oregon State this Saturday, Nov. 28 at 2:00 p.m. in the third of five straight home games. The game will be will be broadcast live on 1500 AM and 820 AM and via the Internet: FederalNewsRadio.com and GWsports.com.
