BEDMINSTER TOWNSHIP, NJ -- GW senior Cole Turner fired a 7-over 151 (75-76) to tie for seventh place, eight strokes off the pace, in the 48-player field at the Lincoln Mercury Intercollegiate, hosted by Seton Hall University, Oct. 17-18, in northern New Jersey. Originally scheduled for 54 holes, the event was shortened to 36 holes due to inclement weather. Saturday's first round play was suspended after five holes due to rain and the teams resumed play on Sunday morning. The teams were able complete two rounds on Sunday.
The Colonials' 36-hole total 611 (311-300) was good for fifth place in the 9-team tournament played at the par-72, 7,014-yard Fiddler's Elbow Country Club. Delaware won the event with a 600 (306-294) to defeat runner-up Boston College (301-302--603) by three strokes.
Three Colonials tied for 13th place, all with 154. The three were senior Sebastian Palomares (80-74), junior Brendan Barrack (78-76) and sophomore Martin Liu (80-74). Junior Max Hamm, who carded the only eagle in the tournament, tied for 21st with a +12 156 (78-78). Palomares and Liu each birdied six holes while Turner and Seton Hall's Troy Spencer led the field with 27 pars each over the 36 holes.
Barrack's 26 pars led the field and he played the par-5 holes in 1-under averaging 4.2 strokes as did Palomares who carded 21 pars in the 36-hole event.
The top five teams were all within 11 stokes. The Colonials finished 19 strokes ahead of sixth-place Navy (630).
Delaware's Justin Martinson won medalist honors with a 1-under 143 to edge his Blue Hen teammate, Kevin McLister, by two strokes.
The Colonials conclude the fall portion of the schedule in the Seascape Intercollegiate hosted by Old Dominion, Oct. 27-28, at Kitty Hawk, NC.
