DURHAM, NC -- The George Washington volleyball team North Carolina Central, 3-0, in a non-conference match Thursday evening at NCCU's McLendon-McDougald Gymnasium. The Colonials defeated the Eagles by the scores, 25-17, 25-20, 25-14, at Durham, NC.
Senior Abby Syverson led the Colonials with 10.5 points on a match-high nine kills in 20 attempts to hit .400. Sophomore setter Alyssa Valentine assisted on 31 of GW's 39 kills while Hannah Stuart led all players with 13 digs.
NC Central (7-19) was led by Belin Behncke-Biney (8 kills) and Shantel Moore (7 kills) each with 8.0 points. Behncke-Biney added a team-high eight digs. Avaniki Campbell had four blocks for the Eagles.
GW combined to hit just .196 on 39 kills in 92 swings with 21 errors while holding the Eagles to just .064 (24-18-94). GW amassed a total of 47 digs to 27 for NCCU.
NCCU's Athletic Director, Dr. Ingrid Wicker-McCree (`89), is a former four-year volleyball letterwinner at GW from 1985-88. She graduated with a degree in criminal justice from George Washington in 1989.
GW (16-6, 4-2 A-10) next plays at Charlotte (13-8, 4-2) Saturday in an A-10 match at 2 p.m. at Halton Arena. The GW-Charlotte match will be available on www.GWsports.com GameTracker.
