WASHINGTON, DC -- The GW Volleyball team welcomed an old friend to Smith Center Friday but the hospitality ended with the first serve. GW defeated Delaware State, 3-0, in the second match of the GW Invitational. Delaware State is coached by former Colonials standout Renee Arnold (`01). GW won by the scores, 25-13, 25-17, 25-13 in a one-hour, 10-minute affair that saw a season-high 12 service aces by the Colonials.
Senior Liz Moult and sophomore Hannah Stuart led the Colonials' offense with 10 kills each. Stuart committed just one error in 22 attempts for a .409 hitting percentage with four digs for 11 points. Moult was nearly as sharp with only two miscues in 24 swings for a .333 attack percentage and two digs for 10.5 points. Freshman setter Alyssa Valentine added 27 assists and three kills in four attempts. Senior Maggie Wright added a season-high 20 digs and sophomore Leah Hill returned to action after missing the last two matches with an injury to contribute five digs.
The first set began inauspiciously for the home team as Delaware State scored the first three points of the set on a pair of kills by Cassandra Joyner and a service ace from Erica Tajchman. GW quickly righted its ship by taking advantage of some Hornet errors to put together a 14-3 run and coast to the 25-13 victory.
GW scored the first four points in set two before DSU strung together seven straight points to take a 7-4 lead. The Hornets managed to lead until the Colonials rallied to tie the set at 13-13 on a kill by Abby Syverson. GW scored the next five unanswered points and took control of the set before claiming the 25-17 victory on a Hornet attack error.
The team battled to a 10-10 tie in the third set before GW went on a 12-1 run that included a pair of service aces by Syverson, for a comfortable 21-11 lead. A pair of kills by Moult ended the match.
Delaware State (3-5) was led by Joyner's 10 kills and two block assists for 12 points while Tajchman added nine points on six kills and seven digs.
With the victory, the Colonials improved to 2-0 all-time against the Hornets.
GW (4-2) next faces the Rider Broncs (5-2) Saturday at 5 pm on day two of the GW Invitational. Rider defeated St. Francis-NY earlier Friday, 3-0. The Broncs and Hornets face off on Saturday at noon.
