Volleyball Takes Down George Mason, 3-1

WASHINGTON, DC -- The GW Volleyball team won its second straight match to open the 2008 season with a 3-1 victory over George Mason Saturday in the third match of the DC Challenge. The Colonials won by the scores, 25-20, 25-22, 25-27, 25-19 at GW's Charles E. Smith Center. In the other early match, American swept Georgetown, 3-0.
GW's Leah Hill led all players with 23 points on her career-high 20 kills with 12 digs for the double-double. GW senior Liz Moult and freshman MacKenzie Knox added 13 kills each while Alyssa Valentine recorded 48 of GW's 53 assists. Senior Maggie Wright added a match-high 18 digs.
GMU was led by Rebecca Walter and Noelle Fanella with 10 kills each. Fernanda Bartels had 43 assists and Chelsea Kropp had 15 digs.
The Colonials upped their lead to 27-8 in the all-time series with George Mason dating back to 1975.
The GW-GMU match was the third in the six-match DC Challenge, a round-robin tournament that features George Mason and Georgetown in addition to the Colonials and Eagles. Georgetown defeated GMU, 3-0, Friday in Fairfax.
