Gabriel, Halkiotis Named A-10 All-Conference Second Team

WASHINGTON, DC - Senior outfielder Chrysanthi Halkiotis (Brookeville, MD/Sherwood H.S.) and sophomore pitcher Amanda Gabriel (Fullerton, CA/Sunny Hills H.S.) have both been named to the Atlantic 10 Softball All-Conference second team, in voting conducted among the Conference's head coaches Tuesday. In the same voting, freshman shortstop Katie Terrazas (Murrieta, CA/Vista Murrieta H.S.) was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team. Junior Carrie Higdon (Newburg, MD/La Plata H.S.) was named Academic All-Conference in voting conducted by the league's sports information directors. The four Colonials named to all-conference teams are the first GW softball players other than Elana Meyers (`07) to be named to an all-conference team.
Halkiotis, who finished fourth in the A-10 with a .362 batting average, also ranked in the top five in both slugging percentage (.614) and on-base percentage (.427). The leadoff hitter from Brookeville, MD, also finished third nationally with .44 doubles per game, and set GW single-season and career records with 17 doubles this season, and 33 career two-base hits. The senior also led the team in hits (46), RBIs (22), total bases (78), and walks (12). Additionally, Halkiotis hit two grand slams this season, also a Colonials record, and now ranks second all-time in GW history with 71 career RBIs and 153 base hits.
Gabriel, who struck out nearly a batter in every inning she pitched (179 strikeouts in 182.2 innings), ranks seventh nationally in fewest walks allowed per seven innings (.88). A Fullerton, CA, native, Gabriel started 69 percent of GW's games this season, but still finished with a 2.03 ERA and second in the conference in strikeouts. The A-10 Pitcher of the Week on March 10, Gabriel threw four shutouts, all in conference games, including an impressive three straight shutouts against Temple and Saint Joseph's. With the bat, Gabriel was also impressive leading the team with 17 runs scored and 12 walks. She finished second on the team with five home runs and drove in a team-best 10 RBIs in conference games.
Terrazas was one of most consistent players for GW as a freshman, leading the team with 12 multi-hit games, and five multi-rbi games. The native of Murrieta, CA, also finished second on GW with a .298 average, 34 hits, nine doubles, and 11 walks. Terrazas led the team in batting in conference games, boasting a .308 average along with a team-best five walks. Despite her experience, Terrazas came through in the clutch, driving in the game-winning run in both wins over Temple, including her first career home run.
Higdon was named to the All-Academic team after leading the Colonials with eight sacrifice hits and an impressive 11 stolen bases in 12 attempts. Higdon also finished second on the team with 15 runs scored, and showed occasional power with two home runs. An accounting major from Newburg, MD, Higdon has maintained a 4.0 grade-point-average in her last four semesters.
