WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington University softball team will begin a ten-game homestand Wednesday, April 2, with a non-conference doubleheader against Towson (18-15, 3-3 CAA) at the Mount Vernon Athletic Complex. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 pm and game two will start approximately 20 minutes after the conclusion of the opener.
GW (5-12, 1-3 Atlantic 10) is looking to snap a five-game losing streak that has included three one-run games and a two-run loss in an eleven-inning marathon at Saint Louis. In those five-games, sophomore Amanda Gabriel has led the Colonials both in the circle and in the batters box. Gabriel is batting .400 in her last five games with a pair of home runs and four RBI. Sophomores Amanda Holst and Elisa Van Kirk, as well as seniors Jackie Yaniga and Chrysanthi Halkiotis, are also batting over .300 in their last five games. Van Kirk has recorded six of her team-high 16 RBI in her last five with a pair of home runs at Georgetown.
Despite dropping her last four decisions, Gabriel has lowered her ERA to 2.37, giving up just seven earned runs in 23.1 innings of work with 21 strikeouts. In the process, Gabriel broke the GW career record for strikeouts and now has 208 in her young career.
Following its Wednesday twinbill with the Tigers, the Colonials will then face Atlantic 10 powerhouse Massachusetts Fri-Sat. April 4-5. GW has never beaten the Minutewomen who have won 24 straight Atlantic 10 games. The Rhode Island Rams then come into town for a 12:00 pm Sunday doubleheader.
The stretch will not get any easier as James Madison travels to the District for a doubleheader Wednesday, April 9 at 3:00 pm. The ten-game homestand will conclude Saturday, April 12 with a twinbill with A-10 rival Dayton at 12:00 pm.
The conclusion of the homestand is also promoted in collaboration with women's tennis as `Aces and Bases.' All youth fans ages 8-18 who attend, the doubleheader or tennis match against James Madison at 2:00 pm, Saturday, April 12 with Dayton, are invited for a free clinic the following day at the Mount Vernon Athletic Complex. Contact assistant softball coach Lisa Iancin at (202)994-4637 or at liancin@gwu.edu to RSVP, or for more information regarding `Aces and Bases.'
