WASHINGTON, DC - After a very successful tour of northern Italy and Slovenia, the GW Volleyball team competed in an exhibition tournament at Georgetown on Saturday, March 29.
The experience overseas paid off with a successful 3-1 match record and 6-3 set record. The only blemish was a 0-2 (16-25, 16-25) defeat at the hands of William & Mary. GW battled and controlled matches against future DC Challenge opponents George Mason (25-14, 19-25, 16-14), Georgetown (25-18, 25-19) and American (25-16 and 26-24).
Colonials' sophomore setter Madelyn Bagby orchestrated a simple and smooth offense set up by the precision passing and digging of junior Maggie Wright and freshman Leah Hill. Freshman hitter Hannah Stuart and junior Liz Moult adjusted well to every situation. Rightside hitters Abby Syverson and Katie Butz set up consistent blocks and terminated the ball when needed. Sophomore middle Stephanie Sharp and freshman Katie Zulandt anchored the defense with solid blocking and strategically placed balls in transition. Freshman Chelsea Cramer stepped in at libero and played scrappy defense.
Next weekend, GW will host its annual spring volleyball tournament at Charles E. Smith Athletic Center on Saturday, April 5. The all-day event begins at 9:00 am and will feature Howard, George Mason and Towson. It marks the Colonials' final spring competition. Admission is free.
