WASHINGTON, DC -- Seven different Colonials scored at least one goal, including a game-high four from sophomore Taylor Donohue, as George Washington overcame a lackluster start to defeat visiting La Salle, 13-7, Friday afternoon at GW's Mount Vernon Field in northwest Washington. The victory was GW's third in their last four outings as they improved to 3-6 overall, 1-0 in the A-10. La Salle fell to 0-8, 0-1 A-10 and has lost its last 17 straight games, including its last eight A-10 contests.
The Explorers, employing a slowed-down pace to begin the game, passed the ball around the perimeter of the GW goal for much of the first five minutes of the contest without attempting a shot. The strategy payed off early as La Salle jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first 17 minutes before GW got on the scoreboard on a Mia Breheny goal at the 11:37 mark of the first half. The Colonials scored again two minutes later on a goal by Audrey Joy to cut the deficit to 3-2.
La Salle responded with a goal by Stefany McKee to put the Explorers up 4-2 with 4:09 left in the first half prompting GW to call a timeout. The Colonials came out of the timeout with considerably more determination, especially senior Kristin Karcsh who scored the next three straight goals, to give GW a 5-4 lead going into halftime.
GW's Donohue opend the scoring in the second half with her first of four tallies on the afternoon five minutes in to the stanza. La Salle's Emily Bonczek, the nation's leading scorer, whipped in her third tally of the day to bring the Explorers to within 6-5 before GW blew the game open by scoring the next seven unanswered goals for a commanding 12-5 lead. Donohue had three goals in the second-half barrage which also saw goals from Katherine Sampson, Joy, Alaska Burr and Katelyn Langs.
The Explorers scored the game's final two goals, one by McKee with 42 seconds left, and an impressive sprint by Bonczek who took the draw control and drove directly to the goal and fired a shot just 11 seconds later.
GW senior goalkeeper Caitlin Garman recorded the win and had 10 saves on the afternoon while LU goalkeeper Mara Schnellenbach took the loss while making nine saves. GW outshot La Salle, 30-25.
GW next hosts Massachusetts this Sunday, March 30, beginning at noon at the Mount Vernon Lacrosse Field (2100 Foxhall Road, NW).
