Late Cal Rally Downs Women's Lacrosse, 13-11

BERKELEY, CA - The George Washington women's lacrosse team enjoyed an 8-4 halftime lead, but the California Golden Bears closed the game on an 8-1 run to knock off the Colonials, 13-11, at Cal's Memorial Stadium Thursday afternoon.
Cal (4-4) struck first, but GW (2-6) rattled off six consecutive goals to take a 6-1 lead with just over 12 minutes to play in the first half. Senior Lindsay Melvin had two goals during the run, while senior Kristin Karcsh had a goal and an assist.
The two teams' traded goals over the final 10 minutes of the period, with junior Katherine Sampson scoring her second goal of the half and senior Laura Wunk adding another to make it 8-4 at the half.
The Colonials twice took five goal leads to start the second half, the first on Melvin's third goal of the game with 25:42 to play and the last on Karcsh's second goal of the contest with 18:17 remaining.
The Golden Bears stormed back with six unanswered goals to take an 11-10 lead with with 4:38 left. Senior Katelyn Honeyford pulled GW even at 11-11 just 25 seconds later, but Cal's Danni Zuralow netted two of her game-high four goals in the final two minutes, the game-winner with 1:54 remaining, to give the Golden Bears' their third win over the Colonials in four meetings.
Melvin had an assist along with her three goals to finish with four points. Wunk and Karcsh each finished with three points, while Sampson had two goals.
Senior goalkeeper Caitlin Garman had 15 saves, her fifth game with 14-or-more saves this season. Sophomore Mia Breheny led GW with four ground balls, while Melvin and junior Alaska Burr had two draw controls apiece.
GW was outshot, 40-32, and trailed in ground balls, 27-21.
GW, the defending Atlantic 10 regular-season co-champions, begins league play next Friday, March 28, at home against La Salle at 3:30 pm.
