WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington University volleyball team embarked Friday on a 9-day, 5-match exhibition tour of Italy from March 14-23. The Colonials will play matches in Venice and Milan among other Italian cities during the trip.
Head coach Jojit Coronel decided to take this trip now because "we feel this core group of players is going to be a strong foundation for the GW volleyball program in the years to come." International trips such as this one are allowed once every four years under NCAA rules.
"It's a rare opportunity for the Colonials players to compete internationally in a country that has sellout crowds at their professional volleyball events," associate head coach Amy Bambanek said. "The team feels this added experience will give them new motivation for the 2008 season."
GW will be playing against junior national teams and professional teams in various cities. The volleyball program raised more than $30,000 from its Sideout Club memberships, adult clinics and tournaments. The team would like to thank the families, friends and volleyball fans without whose support this trip would not have been possible.
Players' daily journal entries and photos from the trip will be posted at http://gwvolleyball.blog.com.
GW concluded the 2007 season with a 13-17 overall record, 5-8 in the Atlantic 10 Conference and qualified for the A-10 championship tournament for the first time in three years.
