WASHINGTON, DC - The Atlantic 10 conference announced Monday afternoon that George Washington University sophomore Amanda Gabriel has been named the conference Pitcher of the Week. This is the first weekly award for Gabriel this season and the second of her career. The native of Fullerton, CA was named Atlantic 10 Co-Rookie of the Week on April 9, 2007.
The right-hander thrower went 2-2 for the week with a pair of ten strikeout games. In 25 innings of work, Gabriel recorded a 2.52 earned run average with 31 strikeouts.
Despite the Colonials dropping a 3-1 decision to Canisius on March 2, Gabriel struck out 10, while allowing just five hits and three runs. On March 4, Gabriel picked up a win against UMBC pitching a complete game, allowing just one earned run on four hits, while striking out eight.
Gabriel pitched a three-hitter on March 9 against Bucknell while striking out ten and allowing just one run. In the 2-1 victory over the Bison, Gabriel allowed all three hits in the second inning, and allowed just a walk and two others runners to reach on errors in the remaining five-plus innings. The complete game was her fifth in seven starts this season.
GW (4-7) is back in action Thursday, March 13 when they travel to Philadelphia to take on La Salle in its Atlantic 10 opener at 2:00 pm. The doubleheader will actually be played on the campus of Temple University and GW will be the home team since La Salle played GW in a home game in Washington, DC last season due to inclement weather.
