PHILADELPHIA, PA - George Washington University senior catcher/outfielder Jackie Yaniga was named Atlantic 10 Player of the Week, which was announced by conference officials Monday afternoon. This is the fourth weekly softball honor Yaniga has received, and the second Player of the Week she was awarded in her career. Yaniga earned her first Player of the Week honor March 6, 2006.
The senior from Miami, FL batted .563 with seven runs scored to lead the Colonials to a 2-3 record at the Carolina Classic Feb. 8-10. Yaniga also posted three multiple-hit games, including a perfect 3-3 performance against N.C. Central on Feb. 10. The All-Tournament Team selection posted nine hits and also added five RBIs on the weekend.
Defensively, Yaniga made her collegiate debut behind the plate and threw out a runner attempting to steal a base.
Yaniga and the Colonials return to the diamond Feb. 26 when they travel to UMBC for a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
