Volleyball Announces Yearly Team Awards

WASHINGTON, DC -- The 2008 George Washington Volleyball Team Awards were presented Dec. 10 at its annual season-ending banquet. Each award winner was selected by her teammates for their contributions throughout the course of the 2008 season.
Sophomore outside hitter Leah Hill was named the team's Most Outstanding Player and senior OH Liz Moult was voted Offensive Player of the Year. Hill was second on the team in kills with 241 and in digs with 271 while posting eight double-doubles (kills/digs). Moult led the Colonials in points (321.5) and kills (290). She recorded double-figure kills in 19 of GW's 30 matches.
For the second straight year, senior libero Maggie Wright was named GW's Defensive Player of the Year with a team-high 454 digs (3.95 dps) and 19 service aces. Wright was voted an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American for the second straight season. Not surprisingly, six-time A-10 Rookie of the Week and Rookie of the Year, Alyssa Valentine was voted GW's Rookie of the Year with a team-high 1,080 assists (9.39 aps). Most Improved Player honors went to sophomore Katie Zulandt who's .273 hitting percentage led the team as did her 83 total blocks (11 solo, 72 assisted). Senior Jackie Yaniga and sophomore Madelyn Bagby were voted co-Most Inspirational Players. Yaniga, a two-sport standout at GW, also starred for the Colonials' softball team while Bagby battled through injury much of the `08 season.
GW posted a 19-11 overall mark in 2008, 9-4 in the A-10 last season to win the A-10 East Division and secure the third seed in the 2008 A-10 Tournament.
