Volleyball Handles Howard, 3-1

WASHINGTON, DC -- The George Washington volleyball team won for the seventh time in its last eight outings with a convincing 3-1 victory over Howard Tuesday night at HU's Burr Gymnasium. The Colonials prevailed by the scores, 25-16, 19-25, 25-17, 28-26.
After GW breezed to a 25-16 triumph in the first set, Howard roared back to win the second set, 25-19, by outscoring the Colonials, 12-6, after the teams had battled to a 13-13 tie. The Colonials scored first in the third set on a Bison attack error and never trailed or tied en route to the 25-17 victory. GW hit .370 as a team in the third set compared to .281 for Howard.
The fourth set was the most competitive featuring 17 ties and eight lead changes before the Colonials broke a 26-26 tie after an attack error by Howard's Keri Partridge and won the match on a kill from senior Jackie Yaniga.
Katie "Zeus" Zulandt had the most efficient hitting match of her career with an errorless .643 on nine kills in 14 swings for 9.5 points. Hannah Stuart continued her strong play of late with a team-high 13 points on 13 kills and 11 digs for her fourth double-double of the season. Atlantic 10 Rookie of Week Alyssa Valentine assisted on 45 of GW's 55 kills (82 percent) and Yaniga matched Stuart's team-high 11 digs. Junior co-captain Abby Syverson hit a solid .375 with 11 kills and senior Liz Moult added 11 kills and a pair of blocks for 12.5 points.
For the match, GW out-hit Howard, .225 (55-23-142) to .213 (52-23-136). Howard won the battle at the net with nine total blocks to just three blocks for GW.
Howard (12-16) was led by Gazelle D'Artois' 19 points on 15 kills and six block assists while hitting .289. Nicole Brown added a match-high 15 digs. Elyssa Lee added 12 kills and six digs.
GW (13-9, 5-4 A-10) is idle for a week before facing Morgan State (3-22) on election night (Nov. 4) in Baltimore.
