CHARLOTTE, NC -- The George Washington volleyball team took advantage of several Charlotte miscues to sweep the 49ers, 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-17), in an Atlantic 10 Conference match Friday evening at Halton Arena.
It marked the second straight victory for the Colonials who swept North Carolina Central 24 hours earlier in Durham. GW senior Liz Moult again led the Colonials with a team-high 13 kills and 15 points while junior Katie Butz scored 9.5 points on six kills three blocks and a pair of service aces. Abby Syverson contributed six kills, six digs and four blocks while setter Alyssa Valentine assisted on 30 of GW's 38 kills.
The match got off to a rocky start for GW as Charlotte took a 3-0 lead on a kill by Kathleen Hicks and a pair of GW attack errors. The Colonials rallied to take a 5-4 lead on a pair of 49er errors and kept the momentum going with a 7-1 run for a 9-4 lead. GW's lead ballooned to 24-15 on timely blocking and kills from Katie Zulandt and Moult before closing out the set on another Moult kill.
The second set started the same way as the first with the Colonials rallying from a deficit to tie the set seven times, the last coming at 20-20, before taking control on a kill by Leah Hill and two more kills from Moult to win the set, 25-21.
The third set was tight up through a 9-9 tie before GW pulled away behind a Butz service ace and three 49er errors to go up, 13-9. Charlotte self-destructed down the stretch by committing eight errors to allow GW to coast to the 25-17 win.
GW combined to hit a respectable .286 (38-10-98) for the match while the 49ers hit just .099 (37-25-121). GW also blocked a total of 9.5 Charlotte attacks led by four block assists each from Syverson, Moult and freshman MacKenzie Knox.
Charlotte (8-11, 0-5 A-10) was led by Hicks' 15.5 points on 13 kills and 11 digs. Kara Raker and Kaitlin Knight each added seven kills.
