The Colonials have posted key victories in their two previous matchups against the 49ers. In the 2006 regular season finale, GW beat Charlotte, 69-65, at Smith Center to earn a share of its fifth consecutive A-10 title with the league newcomer. Last season, GW ended Charlotte's school-record 22-game home court winning streak with a 64-59 triumph.
The Colonials have won seven straight games at Smith Center dating back to the GW Thanksgiving Classic in late November and are 9-1 at home this season. GW has won at least 10 home games in 17 consecutive seasons and are 232-35 at Smith Center under head coach Joe McKeown.
GW head coach Joe McKeown is quickly approaching his 500th career victory. McKeown currently has 497 career wins, three shy of the milestone and in 34th place on the all-time career coaching victories list.
GW ramped up its defensive efforts against La Salle on Wednesday, Jan. 23, limiting the Explorers to just 32 points in a 50-32 victory. La Salle's output was the fewest points GW has allowed to a conference opponent since surrendering the same total in an 81-32 win over St. Bonaventure at Smith Center on Feb. 1, 1992.
Junior Jessica Adair led all scorers with 14 points and junior Antelia Parrish hit a trio of three-pointers and finished with 13 points. GW improved to 8-0 on the season when allowing less than 60 points and has held five of its last eight opponents under 50 points. The Colonials held a 41-32 advantage on the boards against the Explorers to move to 10-1 on the season when outrebounding their foes.
GW women's basketball is having a banner season in terms of attendance, averaging 1,952 fans through 10 home games this season, which would top the program's single-season home attendance average of 1,637 set during the 1995-96 season. The 19,524 fans to watch the Colonials this season marks the fifth highest single-season home total in program history - with five home games remaining. GW has already had the third (3,864 - Rutgers), fourth (3,689 - Xavier) and 11th (2,828 - Texas A&M) highest single-game home crowds in Smith Center history this season.
Charlotte knocked off Dayton, 64-51, on the road Tuesday to improve to a perfect 4-0 in A-10 play and claim sole possession of first place in the league. The 49ers will be looking for their second straight 5-0 league start in Saturday's showdown with the Colonials. After starting the season 0-5, Charlotte has won 13 of its last 15 games and is riding a seven-game winning streak.
First year head coach Karen Aston's team is led by 6-5 center Danielle Burgin's 11.5 points and 8.7 rebounds per game, followed by senior guard Sabrina Gregory's 11.1 ppg. Both Burgin and Gregory were named to the A-10's preseason second team after earning third team honors in 2007. GW assistant coach Mike Bozeman coached Charlotte sophomore Ashley Spriggs at Bishop McNamara HS in Maryland.
