Volleyball Shocked by UMES, 3-1

EASTON, PA -- The George Washington volleyball team was upset by Maryland-Eastern Shore, 3-1, Saturday afternoon in the Lafayette College Tournament at Lafayette's Kirby Sports Center. The Lady Hawks won by the scores, 30-23, 30-27, 21-30, 30-27. The loss snapped a three-match win streak by GW, which fell to 5-5 on the season. It also marked GW's first loss to UMES in six meetings.
For the second straight match, the Colonials were without the services of leading scorer Janine Brown who sustained an injury to her right kneecap prior to GW's earlier match against Fairleigh Dickinson. Without Brown on the court, the Colonials relied heavily on freshman Leah Hill whose 10 kills paced the Colonials' attack. Both Hill and junior Liz Moult were set 47 times each during the four-game match. Moult ended with seven kills but added a pair of block solos and assisted on two more blocks. Sophomore Abby Syverson scored 11 points on eight kills while hitting .261. Senior Erica Williams added 8.5 points on six kills and four blocks.
UMES (4-3) was led by Shaylin Sommer's 17 points on 16 kills and 22 digs. UMES teammate Holiday Eller added 11.5 points on 11 kills and a block assist. Leah Amundson had a match-high 28 digs.
The Lady Hawks were adept at digging the Colonials' attacks alll afternoon and ended with 80 digs to 64 for GW. The Colonials again blocked well at the net with 10 total blocks (5 solo, 10 assisted) to just three blocks (0, 6) for UMES.
GW, MD-Eastern Shore and FDU all finished the tournament with 2-1 records while host Lafayette went 0-3.
GW (5-5) returns to Washington to host the GW Invitational Friday-Saturday at Charles E. Smith Athletic Center. The Colonials host East Carolina Friday at 7 p.m. followed by matches against Hartford and Howard both on Saturday.
