BALTIMORE, MD -- After dropping the first game of the match, the George Washington volleyball team rallied to win three straight games and hand UMBC its first loss of the season Tuesday in Baltimore. GW won by the scores, 24-30, 30-28, 30-17, 30-27 at UMBC's RAC Arena. The victory improved the Colonials' record to 3-4 on the season while the Retrievers fell to 4-1.
The Colonials hit a season-high .263 on 61 kills in 152 attempts while committing just 21 attack errors. UMBC managed to hit .139 (54-31-166). Janine Brown was again the Colonials' go-to player with a match-high 23 kills and 16 digs for 25 points. It marked her seventh straight double-double to start the season. The senior captain from Jacksonville, FL, hit .347 with a pair of block assists and a block solo. Junior Liz Moult contributed 19.5 points on 18 kills and hit .245.
Game one was competitive early with neither team leading by more than three until UMBC increased its 23-21 lead by outscoring the Colonials, 7-3, down the stretch. Game two saw the teams battle through 12 ties including the last at 27-27, before the Colonials were awarded two points on Retriever errors for the 29-27 advantage. A kill by UMBC's Sabrina Hoeks brought the Retrievers within one at 29-28 before a kill by Brown ended the game.
GW came out strong in game three and put it out of reach early on the strength of an 18-3 lead. After UMBC closed to within 29-17, GW's Jackie Yaniga, appearing in her first game of the season, slammed a kill from Jess Buche to end the most lopsided game of the match, 30-17.
Game four was tightly played with the teams tied at 25-25 before a kill by Moult ignited a 5-2 Colonials' run. The match ended on a UMBC service error.
GW (3-4) next plays in the Lafayette Invitational Friday at 6 p.m. against host Lafayette in Easton, PA. The Colonials will also face Fairleigh Dickinson and Maryland-Eastern Shore on Saturday at Lafayette.
