WASHINGTON, DC -- The George Washington volleyball team won its second straight match Saturday with a 3-0 sweep over winless Howard University in the final day of the 2007 GW Volleyball Invitational. The host Colonials won by the scores 30-23, 30-26, 30-14, in one hour, 22 minutes. GW finished as runners-up to tournament champion East Carolina which won all three of its matches during the weekend.
The Colonials had little trouble with the Bison in game one after taking an early 10-3 lead. Howard cut the deficit to three at 16-13 before GW went on a 8-3 run and coasted to the 30-23 win. Game two was closer with the Colonials taking a 15-7 lead and maintaining a 7-8 point cushion before Howard rallied to within two at 22-20 on a GW attack error. The Colonials outscored HU, 8-5 down the stretch to hold on for the victory. Game three was all GW from the start after the Colonials rushed out to a 10-2 lead and was never threatened.
The Colonials were led by senior Janine Brown's 15.5 points on a match-high 13 kills and eight digs. Brown was joined on the All-Tournament team by teammate Abby Syverson who hit an errorless .667 on four kills in six swings and a pair of block assists for 6.0 points. Junior Liz Moult contributed 8.5 points on seven kills while hitting .385.
As a team, GW hit .244 (39 kills, 17 errors, 90 attempts) while Howard combined to hit just .032 (27-24-95). The Bison did, however, manage to out-block the Colonials, 12 to 7.5. It marked only the third time this season that GW had fewer blocks than an opponent.
In the tournament's first match on Saturday, East Carolina (7-5) ripped Howard, 30-22, 30-27, 30-25.
GW (7-6) next plays at Loyola (MD) on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Baltimore, MD.
