Women's Lacrosse Signs Six for 2008

WASHINGTON, DC - George Washington head women's lacrosse coach Tara Hannaford has announced that six student-athletes have signed National Letters of Intent (NLIs) to compete for the Colonials for the 2008 season.
Joining GW for 2008 is midfielder Morgan Appel (Owings Mills, MD/Pikesville), goalkeeper Liz Hoffman (Owings Mills, MD/Beth Tfiloh), attacker Audrey Joy (Winchester, MA/Winchester), Christine Lovett (Bel Air, MD/Bel Air), midfielder Kristin Mobyed (Mineola, NY/Mineola) and midfielder Lauren Mobyed (Mineola, NY/Mineola).
Appel was a two-sport star at Pikesville High School, where she led the Panthers to three regional titles in lacrosse and one in field hockey the past three seasons. Appel was twice named second team all-county in helping the Pikesville lacrosse team reach the Maryland state championship game in 2006 and 2007. Appel, who had 34 goals and nine assists for the Panthers last spring, won Pikesville's Daniel S. Oidick Athlete of the Year Award and was named the MVP of the Baltimore County Senior All-Star Game. Last fall, Appel was a first team all-county performer in field hockey and was selected to play in the Maryland Senior All-Star Game.
Hoffman averaged 7.4 saves per game in helping lead Beth Tfiloh High School to its second consecutive conference semifinal appearance in 2007. The three-time team MVP and captain was an IAAM C Conference All-Star last season and played for the Baltimore-area All-Stars in last spring's Under Armour All-America Lacrosse Classic, making six first-half saves as Baltimore defeated Washington, 11-7.
Joy totaled 186 career points in three seasons at Winchester High School, helping the Sachems to a composite 56-9-1 record and three consecutive Massachusetts state final appearances. Joy posted 40 goals and 40 assists as a senior to earn All-Middlesex League and second team All-Eastern Massachusetts accolades. A three-sport athlete, Joy also competed for Winchester's track and soccer teams.
Lovett was a four-year starter and two-time honorable mention all-county performer at Bel Air High School. Lovett also was a two-year starter for the Bobcats' field hockey team. Bel Air finished the 2007 season with an 8-5 overall record.
Kristin and Lauren Mobyed have helped Mineola High School to conference championships in two of the last three years and a 33-8-3 overall record.
Kristin totaled 55 goals and nine assists during her three-year scholastic career, including 30 goals as a senior in 2007. Kristin was a two-time national Academic All-American by LaxPower.com (2006, 2007) and received an all-conference selection as a junior in 2006.
Lauren was a two-time honorable mention All-Nassau County pick (2005, 2006) and also a two-time LaxPower.com Academic All-American. Lauren earned Class B honorable mention all-state laurels in cross country as a junior.
Hannaford, who is in her first season as head coach, takes over a GW team which captured a share of its first Atlantic 10 regular-season title and appeared in its first A-10 Tournament final last spring. The six newcomers are slated to join nine starters and 19 returning letterwinners on the Colonials roster in 2008.
