WASHINGTON, DC -- The 2007 George Washington volleyball schedule features three matches against teams that appeared in the 2006 NCAA Women's Volleyball Tournament, including a home match against defending A-10 champion Saint Louis on Oct. 21 at Charles E. Smith Athletic Center.
The Colonials also will face `06 NCAA Tournament entries American (six straight Patriot League titles) and Long Island (three-time champions of the Northeast Conference). GW plays AU on Aug. 25 at Bender Arena as part of the second annual DC Challenge tournament. GW will host Long Island Oct. 5 at Smith Center.
GW will compete in four regular-season tournaments beginning with the DC Challenge. The DC Challenge will be co-hosted at George Mason University in Fairfax, VA, and also at American University in Washington, DC.
The Colonials then take part in the VCU Invitational Aug. 31-Sept. 1 in Richmond where they will play Liberty and South Carolina in addition to the host Rams of VCU. That tournament will be followed by the Lafayette Invitational Sept. 7-8 in Easton, PA, where the Colonials play Fairleigh Dickinson, Maryland-Eastern Shore and Lafayette.
The GW Invitational returns to Smith Center Sept. 14-15 featuring East Carolina, Hartford and local rival, Howard.
`Parents/Alumni Weekend' will be held Sept. 28-30 in conjunction with key A-10 Conference matches against Temple and La Salle. Former Colonials volleyball coach Dr. Patricia Sullivan (`78-`86) will be honored at both matches that weekend. `Senior Night' will take place Nov. 9 when Charlotte visits to Smith Center. The three-day Atlantic 10 Conference championship will take place Nov. 16-18 at Charlotte's Halton Arena featuring the league's top six teams.
Head coach Jojit Coronel welcomes back senior Janine Brown (Jacksonville, FL) as the Colonials' top returning hitter and most experienced player. Brown slammed 218 kills last season despite suffering an ankle injury early in the season that limited her to just 64 appearances in GW's 94 games. She was named the MVP of last year's inaugural DC Challenge tournament and was named the team's Rookie of the Year following her freshman season in 2004. She will be joined by sophomore Abby Syverson (Minneapolis, MN), who was an A-10 All-Rookie Team selection in 2006. Syverson is coming off an outstanding freshman season with 171 kills, a .279 hitting percentage and a team-best 37 service aces.
