WASHINGTON, DC - George Washington women's basketball head coach Joe McKeown, along with several members of his coaching staff and team, hosted a taping of the long-running WRC-TV NBC News4 segment Wednesday's Child on campus on June 6.
The Wednesday's Child segment featuring the GW women's basketball team and Gwendolyn, a courageous and bright child from the District seeking adoption, will air three times this week: Wednesday, June 13, at 5 pm; Thursday, June 14, at 10 am; Sunday, June 17, at 9 am.
During the taping, Gwendolyn sided with rising senior Sarah-Jo Lawrence in a two-on-two contest against rising sophomore Stefani Munro and Antelia Parrish and topped assistant coach Mike Bozeman in a game of "O-U-T." Former GW men's basketball player and current Dallas Mavericks' forward Pops Mensah-Bonsu also was on hand to greet Gwendolyn.
Wednesday's Child is a partnership between the Freddie Mac Foundation, the Washington Metropolitan Council of Governments and NBC4 that helps find permanent, loving, adoptive families for children in foster care in the DC metropolitan area. Each week, Barbara Harrison features one child, or sibling group, who is available for adoption. Over the past 15 years, more than 300 children have been adopted as a result of being featured on Wednesday's Child, which has been an invaluable tool in sharing information about the need for permanent homes for children in foster care.
Gwendolyn's hobbies include reading, visiting with her brothers and sister, shopping at local malls, talking with her friends and playing basketball. Gwendolyn, who is an `A' student and recently graduated to junior high school, hopes to become a teacher, because she feels that the profession is very important for children, and play professional basketball as a second career. Gwendolyn needs a family who will be able to support her in achieving her goals, and provide her with the educational and emotional support towards reaching her full potential.
In addition to Gwendolyn, there are more than 250 children in the District of Columbia who are in need of loving adoptive homes. To adopt Gwendolyn or any other child, please call 202-671-LOVE (5683) for more information.
It marked the second time the segment has been taped in conjunction with the GW Athletic Department. Former Colonials men's coach Mike Jarvis also took part in a Wednesday's Child segment in the mid-1990's.
