PHILADELPHIA, PA - The No. 6 seed George Washington Colonials will face the No. 3 seed Saint Louis Billikens (26-31, 11-8 A-10) in the first round of the 2007 Atlantic 10 Championships on Wednesday, May 9, at the UMass Softball Complex. This marks the first time in the five-year history of the program that GW (23-25, 9-11 A-10) has advanced to the Atlantic 10 Tournament.
The No. 4 seed Temple Owls (17-19, 9-7 A-10) will take on the No. 5 seed Charlotte 49ers (32-21, 8-7) in the other opening round game on Wednesday, May 9 at 12:00 pm. Massachusetts (34-12-1, 18-0 A-10) and Fordham (38-18, 16-4 A-10), the top two seeds, respectively, have earned a first-round bye due to the expansion of the tournament to six teams.
The Colonials enter the tournament coming off a split with Saint Louis last Saturday. GW is led offensively by senior Elana Meyers who recorded her 200th career hit and first career Grand Slam in her final home game. Freshman Amanda Gabriel (13-10) is the ace of the pitching staff and set every GW single-season record in her first year. First-year Head Coach Kim Staehle will be making her third Atlantic 10 Tournament coaching appearance. In 2001 and 2002, Staehle directed the Rhode Island Rams to back-to-back Atlantic 10 runner up finishes.
Tickets to the Atlantic 10 Softball Championship are $7.00 for adults for single days and $20.00 for a four-day package. A-10 students and children get in for $3.00 for single day tickets and $10.00 for four-day packages. Tickets will be sold at the entrance to the UMass Softball Complex.
