LITTLESTOWN, PA -- GW sophomore Lewis Sturdy (Keston, Kent, England) shot a 10-over-par 226 (78-76-72) to place 14th, 10 strokes off the pace, in the Mount St. Mary's Spring Invitational Friday and Saturday at the par-72, 7,027-yard Quail Valley Golf Course.
GW, playing without the top three performers from its previous tournament at Princeton last weekend, combined to shoot a 924 (313-308-303) to place eighth in the 17-team tournament. Longwood University won the event with a three-round 881 (293-293-295), 21 strokes ahead of host Mount St. Mary's (902). Longwood's Adam Webb won the tournament with an even-par 216, one shot better than teammate Mark Coradi.
GW coach Scott Allen saw the Mount St. Mary's tournament as an opportunity to look at some different players on the squad during a competition. GW competed at Quail Valley without three of its top four players in terms of scoring average.
Colonials junior Conor McMahon (Portsmouth, RI) was two strokes behind Sturdy carding a 228 (73-78-77) to tie for 19th place out of 87 individuals.
Next up for the Colonials is the 54-hole FirstEnergy Intercollegiate, April 28-29, at Firestone Country Club in Akron, OH.
