RICHMOND, VA - The George Washington women's lacrosse team erased a 5-0 first-half deficit to tie No. 20 Richmond early in the second half, but the nationally-ranked Spiders pulled away and dealt the Colonials a 10-7 defeat in both teams' Atlantic 10 Conference opener on Sunday.
Senior Kristina Harvey and junior Katelyn Honeyford tallied two goals apiece to lead GW (4-5, 0-1 A-10). Leading scorer junior Kristin Karcsh netted just one goal, but added a pair of assists to finish with three points, while classmate Laura Wunk had a goal and an assist.
Richmond's (7-4, 1-0 A-10) Claire Cunniff scored nine seconds into the game to start the Spiders opening five-goal run. UR went up 5-0 at the 11:23 mark, but GW finished the period with a flourish. Sophomore Katherine Sampson converted a dish from Karcsh with 6:28 left in the half to get the Colonials on the board. Honeyford then scored twice, with a Harvey goal sandwiched in between, as GW narrowed the gap to 5-4 at halftime.
Wunk completed the rally off an assist from sophomore Meghan Cratty at the 23:57 mark of the second half to knot the game at 5-5. Richmond responded with three consecutive goals and five of the next six to open a 10-6 advantage with 8:08 left in the game. Harvey registered her second goal of the game on Wunk's helper at the 7:04 mark, but the Spiders kept the Colonials at bay the rest of the way.
Junior goalkeeper Caitlin Garman made eight saves in the loss. Honeyford picked up a game-high three ground balls and caused two turnovers. GW outshot the Spiders 25-22, but converted just 1-of-10 free-position attempts.
GW visits A-10 rival Massachusetts next Sunday, April 8 at 12:00 pm. The Colonials fell to the Minutewomen 11-10 at Mount Vernon Field in last year's season finale.
