Colonials Split Doubleheader with UMBC

WASHINGTON, DC - Junior Chrysanthi Halkiotis (Brookeville, MD) delivered a pinch-hit single in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the George Washington Colonials (6-3) a 5-4 victory over Maryland-Baltimore County (1-1), in the first game in a doubleheader at GW's Mount Vernon Softball Complex on Tuesday.
The Colonials got on the board first in the opener when senior Nikki Brooks (Chillicothe, OH) singled to left to bring in junior Caroline Howe (Los Alamitos, CA) who walked earlier in the inning.
UMBC responded for four runs on four hits in the next two innings off freshman right-hander Amanda Gabriel (Fullerton, CA) who pitched her second straight complete game. Gabriel did not allow a run the rest of the way.
The Colonials rallied for three runs in the bottom of the sixth to even the game at 4-4. Juniors Katie Miller (Manteo, NC) and Kaity Harbour (Macomb, MI) both walked to get the tying run to the plate in senior Elana Meyers (Douglasville, GA). With the infield playing back, Meyers laid down a bunt single to load the bases. Sophomore Carrie Higdon (Newburg, MD) singled to left driving in Miller from third. With the bases still jammed, UMBC pitcher Ashley Gray threw a wild pitch that scored senior pinch-runner Janelle Parker (Mount Vernon, NY). With one out, Howe came up next and flew out to deep left to score Meyers to tie the game.
In the bottom of the ninth, junior Hilary King (Canal Winchester, OH) led off with her third walk of the game. Brooks attempted to sacrifice her over but reached on a fielders choice. Junior Colleen Kegler (Yardley, PA) then singled off the glove of third baseman Reilly Ward to put two runners on. Miller the reached on an error to load the bases before Halkiotis delivered the game winner.
Gabriel gave up four earned runs in nine innings of work for the Colonials while striking out six to get GW its sixth win of the season.
The Colonials dropped the second game of the doubleheader, 5-2, in six innings. The game was called in the sixth due to darkness.
GW's scheduled doubleheader tomorrow at Towson has been postponed until Thursday, April 19 at 3:00 pm. The Colonials next travel to Kissimmee, FL, to take part in the Rebel Spring Games from March 11-15. GW will play eight games over the five days.
