WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington Colonials (5-2) won their annual Colonial Classic this weekend after finishing 2-1, defeating Canisius and Army and falling to Colgate. Longwood also finished 2-1 but GW won the tiebreaker by allowing fewer runs over the weekend.
The final game of the Colonial Classic was scheduled to be GW vs. Longwood but both teams agreed to cancel the deciding game due to poor weather conditions.
Among the highlights from the weekend was a game winning two-run homer by Jackie Yaniga to lead GW to a 5-4 victory over Army. Earlier in the game Nikki Brooks delivered a two-run single with the bases loaded.
Amanda Gabriel pitched the first complete game of her career striking out five and allowing just one earned run in a 6-3 win over Canisius. Junior Katie Miller went 2-3 with two doubles and a run scored in the game.
Elana Meyers led the Colonials with four base-hits and two runs-scored over the weekend.
Last week's Atlantic 10 Player of the Week, junior Hilary King recorded a team-high three RBIs over the weekend with one in each game.
The Colonials are back in action on Tuesday when they host Maryland-Baltimore County in a 1:00 pm doubleheader. GW will travel to Towson on Thursday for a 2:00 pm doubleheader.
