GW Lacrosse Waits, Then Falls to Drexel, 14-8

WASHINGTON, DC -- Drexel's Emily Hoesch scored a game-high six goals to lead the visiting Dragons past George Washington, 14-8, Sunday at GW's Mount Vernon Lacrosse Field. The loss snapped a two-game winning streak for the Colonials who evened their record to 3-3 overall. Drexel improved to 6-1 on the season.
The game, scheduled to begin at 1 p.m., was delayed for two hours, 10 minutes due to multiple bus breakdowns en route from Philadelphia to Washington. Some of the Drexel parents, along GW staff, picked up the Drexel players and coaches from northwest Washington for the final leg of the trip to the Mount Vernon campus.
The delay didn't bother the Dragons, however, as Hoesch scored the game's first goal less than a minute into the contest on a free position shot. GW answered less than a minute later on an unassisted goal by junior Laura Wunk to knot the score at 1-1 just one-minute, five seconds into the game.
The teams continued to trade goals over the next nine minutes for a 3-3 tie with 10:54 remaining in the first half before Drexel scored four unanswered goals to take command at 7-3 with 4:12 until the break. GW's Kristin Karcsh added a goal for the Colonials to cut the margin to 7-4 at halftime.
GW opened the second half with a goal by junior Lindsay Melvin less than two minutes into the period but Drexel's Katie Bradley responded with a goal after taking a pass from Kerry Kelly to put Drexel up, 8-5. GW's Wunk took a pass from A-10 Player of the Week, Katherine Sampson and found the net to get the Colonials within two at 8-6 with just over 20 minutes remaining in the contest.
Drexel then put the game away by scoring six straight goals, three by Hoesch, for a 14-6 lead that was never threatened.
GW got a goal from Wunk and one from junior Katelyn Honeyford on a free-position shot in the last two minutes for the final margin.
GW junior goalkeeper Caitlin Garman recorded seven saves in the loss. Drexel goalkeeper Lauren LaBella got credit for the win and made 11 saves on 27 GW shots. GW outshot Drexel, 27-26.
