Softball Set To Host Georgetown on Sunday

WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington softball team (10-7) will host cross-town rival Georgetown in a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon, at 1:00 pm, at the Mount Vernon Softball Complex. The Colonials have won three straight games, and most recently swept Mississippi Valley State and Butler in the final day of the Rebel Spring Games.
In a 6-5 victory over Mississippi Valley State, freshman Amanda Gabriel pitched a complete game, allowing just five runs and striking out seven. Gabriel also added a two-run double in the fourth inning.
The Colonials scored three runs in the fourth, including Gabriel's double later in the inning. Sophomore Tori Sensi led off the inning with a double to left and advanced to third on a groundout by sophomore Carrie Higdon. Junior Katie Miller drove her in on a suicide squeeze play. Senior Katie Harbour then reached on an infield single putting two runners on for Gabriel.
Down by two in the bottom of the seventh, the Colonials rallied to get the win. Junior Chrysanthi Halkiotis (Kree) led off with a single to centerfield, which was then followed by a double to left by senior Elana Meyers. With two runners in socring position, junior Hilary King came in to pinch hit for junior Caroline Howe and tied the game with a two-run double to left. Sensi sacrificed King over to third and she scored on an error by the second baseman off the bat of Higdon.
In the second game, junior Lisa Cohen also went seven innings to get a 3-2 victory over Butler. The Colonials got on the board in the fifth inning on an RBI double by Halkiotis to score senior pinch runner, Janelle Parker. Kree also drove in the game-tying and winning run in the top of the seventh inning with a bases loaded double.
The Colonials went 4-4 over their spring break trip at the Rebel Spring Games.
GW went 2-0 over Georgetown in the Hoyas first season sponsoring softball as a varsity sport. The Hoyas are led offensively by Jadig Garcia and Samantha Peters who are batting over .320. Cathy Richter leads the team with eight extra base hits, including the only home run in program history. Georgetown's pitching staff consists of Sarah Kamenski (1-9, 4.99 ERA) and Jennifer Connell (5-8, 5.00 ERA).
