Virginia Tech vs. George Washington
Dec. 12, 2007
George Washington Head Coach Karl Hobbs
On why Virginia Tech was able to have so much success today:
"I think that they play with a great deal of energy. I thought early in the game we just couldn't make a shot. I thought they kept their composure, and they just really outplayed us at every phase of the game. They out physicalled us. They out ran us. They out shot us. They dominated every phase of the game."
On if he has to start from scratch with the team after today's result:
"I'm not sure. I know that there has to be some changes. There were some performances that just aren't acceptable, so with that being said, there needs to be some changes."
On if today's offensive performance was a result of Tech's defense or GW's poor shooting or a combination of both:
"With all due respect, I think you have to give them the credit. I think they came in well-prepared for the game. I think they were up to play the game, and they did a nice job."
Virginia Tech Head Coach Seth Greenberg
Opening Remarks:
"I'm really proud of our guys. I thought we had tremendous defensive focus and intensity. I thought we did a terrific job of guarding the basketball and being active in our gaps and closing out with our hands above the ball and finishing possessions. That enabled us to get out and run and get some easy baskets. I thought early on, we were pressing a little bit and taking the first shot, rather than maybe making the extra pass. As the game unfolded, we started to be a little bit more unselfish and make the extra pass to get more people involved.
Defensively, like I said, I thought we were terrific the possessions. The unsung hero of this game is Cheick Diakite. I thought he was terrific defensively. He rebounded the ball. He contested (Rob) Diggs, who's a terrific player. I thought he was very good. I thought Malcolm Delaney, defensively, and Hank (Thorns) did a good job of keeping (Maureece) Rice in front. I just thought that our ability to convert stops in the baskets was important. We knew coming into the game we had to rebound the ball, guard the dribble and be alert defensively. I thought we did those things."
On if Diakite can consistently give a similar performance to today's game:
I think he can post, defend and rebound the basketball. I don't know about that Magic Johnson pass right there though. That was Magic Cheick, but that was a hell of a pass. I think he can run the court. I think he can rebound on the defensive end. I think he can be a physical post-defender and contest shots. I think he can do those things.
On if the last two games are an indication of what the team will be doing the rest of the season:
"Well, we struggled. We are not exactly the Phoenix Suns, but with this many young guys that are starting to understand how to compete on the defensive end and guard the ball and keep the ball in front. That's really what I'm proud of."
