WASHINGTON, DC -- George Washington basketball coach Karl Hobbs has announced that guard Tony Taylor has signed a National Letter-of-Intent to play for the Colonials in 2008.
Taylor is a 5-foot-11, 165-pound guard from Mount Vernon, NY. He averaged 22.4 points, seven assists and 2.2 steals as a junior last season at Archbishop Stepinac High School in White Plains, NY, under coach Tim Philp. The Crusaders posted a 17-7 record during Taylor's junior season in 2007.
Taylor totalled 551 points and 171 assists (6.8 apg) to lead Westchester County in both categories last season. He was named All-County second team by the Westchester County Journal News as well as New York City honorable mention by the New York Daily News.
"We're very excited to get a top quality player from the New York area," Hobbs said. "I feel he is going to make an immediate impact on our program. Tony brings all the intangibles we look for in a student-athlete. He's a guard with terrific speed and court vision who can create plays. What separates him is his ability to shoot from three-point range. He also is a very goal-oriented student-athlete."
"Tony has an unbelieveable basketball IQ," Philp said of Taylor. "He is extremely consistent, a great passer and a terrific shooter who makes everyone around him better. He is a pure point guard who can shoot like a 2 guard."
The Colonials won the 2007 Atlantic 10 Conference Championship last March and earned its third straight NCAA Tournament berth in 2007.
GW (2-0) faces UMBC Saturday at 2 p.m. in Baltimore, MD. The game can be heard live on 3WT radio 107.7 FM, 1500 AM and 820 AM as well as www.GWsports.com.
